Copyright Office

The Copyright office assists the campus community in understanding copyright law, providing resources to make informed copyright decisions, processing permission requests and coordinating coursepacks. The Copyright Resources below provide information about copyright, fair use and a fair use checklist to use as a tool in making copyright decisions.

The Copyright Office provides assistance with the following services:

  • Interpreting WWU's Use of Copyrighted Materials policy and the federal copyright laws.
  • Determining whether published material is within the public domain, requires copyright clearance or use is permissible under the Fair Use guidelines.
  • Requesting copyright permission from copyright owners for the use of materials in coursepacks, class handouts and other university uses.
  • Tracking royalty fees and processing payment to copyright owners.
  • Initiation and set-up of coursepacks. Coordination of coursepack production and sales at the Student Bookstore

If use of copyrighted materials is in question, it is the policy of the Copyright Office to acquire permission, removing the University from any potential liability for illegal use of materials.
