VPN For Mac OS X

You can now download and install the Cisco Mac OS X VPN client software used to make a secure “Virtual Private Network” (VPN) connection to the WWU VPN gateway.

Step #1 – Preliminaries - Before Installation

  1. Obtain Permissions: Before you can use the Mac VPN client to connect to the WWU VPN gateway, you must be assigned to a Novell NDS group with permissions to make a VPN connection. Request VPN permissions from the ATUS help desk (650-3333). For access to Administrative applications such as Banner, submit a Remote Admin Systems Access Request E-sign form.
  2. Check your system: You will need at least 20 Mb free space on your primary volume before beginning installation. Check to make sure that you are not running conflicting software such as other VPN clients.
  3. Download the Mac VPN Package. The disk image file named WWUVPNMac.dmg will be saved where you have configured your web browser to save downloaded files (Desktop is default).

Step #2 – Installation

  1. Open (double-click) the download. The disk image will be mounted to your desktop as "CiscoVPNClient."
  2. Open (double-click) the disk image and double-click on the file "Cisco VPN Client.mpkg."  The installation process will start.
  3. Click Continue when prompted with the message "This package contains a program that determines if the software can be installed. Are you sure you want to continue?"
  4. Click Continue again on the Introduction screen.
  5. Click Continue and Agree on the License screen.
  6. Select what volume you want this software to be installed on and click Continue.
  7. Click Install on the Installation Type screen. Enter your Mac login and password when prompted.
  8. Click Close to finish the install. Close the disk image window and eject the disk image CiscoVPNClient.

Step #3 – Test and Clean-up

  1. If you are using a modem and need to make a connection to the Internet through your ISP, do this before initiating a VPN session.
  2. Under Applications, open "VPNClient.app."
  3. Click the Connect button.
  4. Enter your WWU Universal ID and Password when prompted for Username and Password.
  5. The VPN client status should say "negotiating..." and then "Connected to "WWU VPN."  You are now connected.
  6. When you are finished with a VPN session, click on “Disconnect” to end your session.

Note To Users:

The WWU VPN gateway can service 100 connections simultaneously. It is a resource shared by many; it is important to not leave a session open when you are not using it. To keep the gateway available, your session will time out after 30 minutes without user activity. In addition, a session is limited to 8 consecutive hours. If your session becomes disconnected, simple open the "VPN Client" application and start another session.

That's all, folks! In some cases there may be problems installing the Client on particular systems. Address any questions or comments to the ATUS Help Desk, (650-3333) We will work with you to troubleshoot and resolve any problems.
