How to Map a Network Drive (for PCs)

Many of the servers on campus can be mapped to a drive so that the server appears to be part of your hard drive. Just as your P drive is mapped to your department files, and your U drive is mapped to your personal file area and your myweb area, other servers can also be mapped to your computer to provide you easy drag-and-drop access. The most common use of this is for those responsible for maintaining their department website on the Ra server, so this is the example we'll show below. However this procedure can be applied to any server on campus that has mapping available.

"MyComputer icon"
Please contact webhelp@wwu.edu if you have any questions about a particular server.

  1. Double click the MyComputer icon from the desktop or select Start, MyComputer.
  2.
  3. Select Tools from the top menu and then Map Network Drive...
  4. From the Map Network Drive dialog, select a Drive letter or use the default, and select a folder or share name. For a department web this would be \\ra\sharename where sharename is your URL like atus or huxley.
  5. If you anticipate using this drive frequently, make sure Reconnect at logon is checked so you don't have to redo this process each time you bring up your computer.
"Map Network Drive dialog box"

That's it. Now when you go to MyComputer you will be able to drag and drop files to this new "drive" on your computer.
