Image Gallery Set-up Instructions
Introduction
Flash Image Gallery is a free Flash-based applet that allows you to elegantly display images on
your Web site. For more information, please visit their site.
For your convenience, Web Services is including Flash Image Gallery in our template
distributions. This guide will walk you through the process of managing your image gallery.
Requirements
Please note that this tutorial assumes that you can work directly in your web share’s file system
(outside of Contribute).
It is also assumed that you are working from a Windows-based computer to manage your image
gallery.
Adding a New Set of Images
From the /gallery folder inside your web share, double-click on makeGallery.exe. This
program will assist you in taking a folder full of images, and placing that set of images in your
gallery.
To add a new set of images to your gallery follow these steps from the makeGallery.exe
program:
- Click on File > Add Pics
- Select a folder on your computer that contains the images you would like to make
available, then click on OK.
- Please note that all of the images in that folder will be made available
- Once you have selected a folder, you will not have an easy way of adding more
images to the set. This means that you should figure out which images you would
like to display in the set ahead of time, place all the images in a folder, then select
that folder.
- You will then be prompted to select a name for the set of images. After you have entered
a name, click on OK.
- Depending on how many pictures you have in the folder, the program may be busy for a
few moments. After it is finished, you will see a list of all the images that have been
copied.
- To set an image’s description, click on the image, and then type a description in the text
box at the bottom of the window.
- Once you have typed in a description for each image, you may close the program and
your image set will be available in the image gallery.
Removing a Set of Images
To remove a set of images, open up the /gallery folder inside your web share, then follow these
steps:
- Delete the folder that contains your images (it should have the same name as the set of
images that you wish to remove).
- Open the makeGallery.exe program.
- Click on Edit > Menu; a text file will pop up.
- Select the line that references the set of images that should be removed, and delete the
line. For example, if you want to remove Sample Pictures, select the line
from the text file and delete it:
- Save the file and exit.
Adding / Removing Individual Images
Doing this is very complicated and should not be attempted by novice users; novice users should
contact Web Services for help. The makeGallery.exe program will not be useful is this case.
Adding an Image
- Create a thumbnail version of the image using your image editor of choice. The
thumbnail should be a 148x111 JPG file with the same name as your original.
- In your existing image set folder, copy the large image (which needs to be a JPG file).
- In the /thumbs folder, copy the thumbnail.
- Back in the image set’s folder, open the pics.xml file using Notepad.
- Add a line in the file for your image (just follow the pattern that other images use).
Removing an Image
- In your image set folder, delete the thumbnail and full size versions of your image.
- Open the pics.xml file using Notepad.
- Remove the line that references your old image.
