Blackboard Delivers Many Assessment Options

by John Farquhar

Blackboard as an e-learning tool for testing, assessment and reporting is increasingly utilized by faculty members across campus. At the most basic level, Blackboard is often used to report grades back to the student for any class assignment. The process is as easy as creating a new column in your gradebook spreadsheet and then entering the grades. Because Blackboard requires individual, secure logins, students will see only their own grades.

In addition, a number of Western faculty members are delivering quizzes, tests and other forms of assessments using Blackboard. This use can vary from lecture warm-ups to practice quizzes, midterms and finals. Options within Blackboard let the instructor allow single or multiple attempts as well as the amount and kind of feedback automatically delivered to the student. Assessments can also be built by randomizing questions from a pre-defined question pool giving considerable flexibility.

To explore these options in more detail, you can attend the 90-minute hands-on workshop, "Advanced Blackboard," on November 19 in Miller Hall 154. Kathy Podmayer will review all of the assessment features and answer any questions. Please sign up for this workshop at http://www.acadweb.wwu.edu/atus/class/, or contact Kathy at 650-6222, email Kathy.podmayer@wwu.edu for further information.
