Tech Tips

Fred Robson and Nancy Grayum

The HP II & III series printers have been with us for 13 to 15 years. Unfortunately they have now reached "end of life." Some parts are no longer available for these models. If you have a an HP II, HP III or the IIP/IIIP series, it's time to think of alternatives for your printing needs.

Network printing is a much more cost effective printing solution, and many offices already have network printers available. One shared printer, one toner cartridge, and the cost per copy is sometimes less than on the smaller office printer. If you do need a stand alone printer, there is a large selection of color ink jets and small black and white laser printers available.

When looking for a faster computer, we sometimes think of adding more memory or upgrading the processor. However, the most effective way to speed up your machine is with a faster hard drive. Standard hard drive speeds are 5400 rpm, but adding a 7200 rpm drive increases overall performance.

New computers today offer Serial ATA drives that add even more performance to your system with a much faster data transfer rate. Costs are higher but if speed is the goal, Serial ATA is the means. Contact your ATUS Technician for details by calling the Help Desk, 650-3333.

Classroom projector images sometimes need to be "blanked" quickly during a presentation. If you are using PowerPoint, simply press the "B" on the keyboard to blank/unblank the screen. If you are teaching with other software, you can create one PowerPoint slide that is all black, and run PowerPoint in the background. Then just use the Alt-Tab key command to go back and forth between your software and the black PowerPoint screen. (Thanks to Susan Brown and Gordon Chalmers for these tips!)
