Issue 31, Fall 2004

Within minutes of opening the Student Technology Center (STC) just off Red Square, staff members were busy assisting students with software questions. Formed last winter, the STC is rapidly becoming known for providing technology workshops, tutoring, and tools for multimedia production. Workshops are offered daily on such topics as web development, PowerPoint and Excel. Peer tutoring is available on a broader range of applications.
The new location, Haggard Hall 121, allowed us to co-locate with other student computer labs and the ATUS Help Desk. The STC now includes a digital video editing lab as well as a system of VCRs for duplicating and converting digital and analog videotape. While we have one area for small-group training sessions, we can now accommodate larger training groups in an adjoining lab.
During the opening weeks of fall quarter, our student employees visited numerous classes to provide brief orientations about our services. Give us a call at 650-4300 if you’d like us to visit your classes. We have also hosted more than 20 tours in the Center, showing students a variety of technology resources available to them.
Many faculty members have also begun to integrate our services into their own classes. We routinely visit classes to deliver complete hands-on workshops or technology demonstrations in response to faculty requests. Faculty members also coordinate with us to provide course-related technology workshops outside of their regular class times. Last spring, after informing his students of the services available at the STC, Professor Mike Mana told us, “lines were shorter to my office, [student] posters were better, and my students were less stressed,” than in previous quarters.
Edwyna Spiegel, a post-baccalaureate student in the Woodring College of Education, told us, “working with Jeff in the STC lab has made me feel much more confident because I now have some familiarity with the programs, and know that when I have class problems in the fall - you folks are there to help us out. The establishment of this lab was just a fabulous event - just what we boomers needed!” Edwyna was referring to Jeff Honcoop, a graduate assistant in the MBA program who leads the student staff in the STC.
The ATUS Instructional Support Group welcomes your input for how the Student Technology Center might coordinate support for your instruction. If you find your students needing improved technical skills, or if you have other recommendations for the services we provide, please contact Susan Brown at 650-7222.
