A house and garden is visible in the background.The Model Mill was one of many shingle mills in early Whatcom County.

Description: On same sheet as photo 2429. Caption printed below photo: "Wardner, Idaho, in 1886 - The $4,000,000 Donkey in the Foreground - The *[star] marks the location of the Bunker Hill Mine." In additon to the wooley donkey with three children astride, two children stand at its head in a muddy street. Several men and horses stand beyond them. The Cove & Crane General Merchandise store is behind them along with three other buildings. Mountains are in the background with the mine's location marked by a star. A rugged-looking place.

Description: An "Iron Chink" on display at the 1909 Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition. According to sign behind the machine it was shown in the actual operation of butchering salmon. Three men stand by the machine; several salmon are laid out on a table adjacent. A fourth man stands on a platform with a camera to record the operation. The machine removed heads, tails, fins and viscera of salmon and was invented by Edmund Smith (who worked for PAF in Fairhaven).

Description: Storefront of Underwood & Minturn selling Hardware, Stoves, Tinware. Founded in 1891. Several men in suits and hats stand on the wooden sidewalk in front of the two doorways. Goods are on display in the windows.An unidentified object ( a stove?) and a coil of rope or wire sit on the sidewalk in front of the store. Plank road is in foreground. Caption on reverse in pencil: "1891 Opening day" and in ink: "Photo made 1200 State St. Later became the Pantages Theater, then later Haskell Plumbing & Heating; later burned." And in ink: "from pat Nelson...to Galen." Stamped in ink: "E.A. Hegg Photographer, Elk St. New Whatcom."

Description: Eleven men, three women,(one wearing an elaborate hat), and three young children beside a wooden building labeled "Excelsior Mill View" in white ink. On reverse in ink: "Hunsby, Johnson, Partners (?), Esther(?)Morse" and "Mrs. H Hunsby" in pencil across the top. Two of the men in the front row have pipes in their mouths and one has his hand on the other's shoulder. Possibly Hunsby and Johnson? The Excelsior Mill was in Lawrence, thirteen miles northeast of Whatcom in the early 1900's.

Construction was completed in 1915 on land and building donated by CX Larrabee, and designed by Seattle-based architect Carl Gould. Engberg's Pharmacy and Portland Market are visible on one side, The First National Bank, and the Hannah Block across the street.

Kincaid Deputy Clerk" Apparently this was an exhibit in a court case.

Description: The Fairhaven Hotel, in its incarnation as Hotel Victoria, an imposing five story, sandstone and brick building with an ornate cupola or tower, arched windows with "The Fairhaven" carved over the arched doorways, three gables on each side with Model T (or A?) cars parked in front and across the street. Trolley tracks are visible on the paved street; surrounding area around the hotel in Fairhaven is residential but not densley developed. Electric/telephone wires line the streets. The Fairhaven Hotel, owned by C.X. Larrabee, originally opened in 1890; it closed in 1899 and was put up for sale after repairs and renovation, in 1904; it sold to Yoghurt Sanitarium in 1922 and was renamed Hotel Victoria in 1923. In 1928 the tower was removed and the name "Fairhaven" was restored. In 1937 Whatcom County acquired the building; in 1953 it was damaged by fire, then sold for demolition which was completed in 1956.
