Description: An unidentified vegetable garden with plants beginning to show above ground. Many stakes are visible for climbing plants. A dirt road runs along the garden in the background. What appear to be electric wires run diagonally across the lower left of the photo. There is also a wodden fenced area in the lower foreground. Wood planks are stacked in the upper right near the road. Might be Joe's Garden many years ago before 32nd Street was paved. Could also be Galen Biery's garden which was extensive. Description: Caption on reverse in ink: "Roche Harbor: Tacoma and Roche Harbor Lime Co. Battery of kilns. - Source: Galen Biery - Date: August 21, 1979" Shows lime kiln operation with with smoke rising from the 8 kilns and a trestle railway above them. A two story white clapboard building is at the water's edge right below the kilns. Several workers stand on a plank walkway adjacent to the building and there are men in two rowboats in the water below.

Description: Unidentified salmon processing machine with four men in rain coats and rain hats standing around it. Probably the Smith butchering machine that gutted and cleaned the salmon. Headless salmon are lined up on the bed of the machine. To the right of this several women in white aprons with their backs to the men; they are probably the "slimers", who inspected fish for blemishes and patched any parts the equipment had missed. Probably at the Pacific American Fisheries processing and canning operation in Fairhaven.

Description: Photocopy of article entitled "Jimmie Pickett Pictures Bay" describing the birds painting Pickett did of Bellingham Bay in 1888, fanciful in some respects, accurate in others. The newspaper Reveille had a large engraving made of this painting and used it in its special edition of April 19, 1889. Hundreds of copies of the engraving were made and used to advertise Bellingham Bay nationwide.

Description: Caption on reverse in ink: "Daily Reveille 1899" This may be a portion of Jimmie Pickett's drawing of a birdseye view of Bellingham Bay, although it must be an incomplete version if it is; it appeared in the Reveille in April 1889. See photo 2811 for description. This photo shows Fairhaven in the distance, then Old Bellingham, Sehome and Whatcom aligned along Bellingham Bay that is dotted with ships and traversed by a railroad. Sawmills and long piers are visible; churches and hotels as well as many other structures are visible. Lake Whatcom and Mt Baker appear in the distance in the upperleft of the picture.

Description: Caption on reverse in ink: "Longstaff & Black houses in Bellingham" and printed on front: "Fairhaven Residences" and "No 1. Roland G. Gamwell.- No 2. Colonel Will. L. Visscher. - No 3. Longstaff & Black. - No 4. A.H. Clark." Four Victorian/Queen Anne houses in Fairhaven, three of which were designed by Longstaff & Black (all but the Visscher house). The Gamwell house is at 16th and Douglas; the Longstaff & Black house is at 1210 Gambier; the Clark house at 14th and Easton and was changed from a Victorian exterior to a Tudor. All were built in 1890.

Black, both Boston natives, taken from Lottie Roth's History of Whatcom County. Longstaff came to Fairhaven to build the Fairhaven Hotel; he persuaded Black, his former partner, to join him in 1889.

Description: Caption on reverse in ink: "1961 - Post Office site - John Stenger residence" John Stenger was in charge of the Colony Mill and built the house in the picture in 1889 on four acres on Prospect Street. It was a white two story, clapboard, cross-gabled house with first story bay window and nicely landscaped at 315 Prospect Street. It was torn down in 1963 to build the post office. At that time Stenger's daughter, Mrs. Cecil K. Rinehart lived in the house. Several 1950's vintage cars are parked on each side of the street. In the background are log booms, industrial buildings, possibly the Roth apartments, Bellingham Bay and Lummi Island.

Description: Caption on front in ink: "Circus Day Parade - Bellingham Wn" and on reverse in ink: "Parade, Holly St. 1908" A large crowd of men, women and children line both sides of Holly Street while pairs of elephants parade in the center. It must have been a festive occasion since the spectators are well dressed - men in suits and hats, women in long skirts or dresses, blouses (shirtwaists) and fancy hats. The Sweet Grocery Co. truck pulled by two horses is in the foreground. According to "Looking Back" this was the Barnum and Bailey Circus Parade in 1908.
