Description: Back caption: "abt. 1891. Sehome, Wash." A view toward the north west of Bellingham from atop Sehome Hill. The large building on the far right is Sehome School. Just above the school and further to the right is the church that still (2002) stands at the corner of Maple and High Streets. The south end of High Street deadends where it would cross Myrtle, if Myrtle existed. The dark colored house to the left of the school is 900 High Street. In the center, fronting on Garden Street are seven small houses; the two on the left stand today (2002) as 814 and a much remodeled 818 North Garden Street. The third from the left and the one on the far left were demolished. The center house was moved north and attached to the back of its neighbor to make a duplex which stands fairly unchanged today (2002) at 826 North Garden. Toward the water, paralell to Garden Street, is Forest Street and it deadends on the B.B.I.Co. Reserve property which was bounded by Garden, Rose, Berry and Elk (State) Streets. Eventually, Forest Street was cut through so that today (2003) the east halfis the property of the Seventh Day Adventists and the west portion, where Orchard House stood, is an apartment complex called Orchard Terrace. The mill (Globe Mill), here situated on pillings, is now the south end of the Georgia Pacific site.

Description: Bellingham Bay and waterfront viewed from Sehome Hill. The street in the foreground is North Garden Street. About halfway up the photo on the extreme right-hand side is Bellingham's City Hall. On the lower right quarter are five, clearly visible, false-fronted buildings: The center one has a sign reading "Sehome Livery." There are about 12 buildings here, on either side of Elk (State) Street as it goes up the hill toward the present day (2002) Armory. The curved roadway just to the left of these buildings is part of a planked and elevated roadway that connected the Sehome Docks with Ivy Street. The white, three-storey, "L" shaped building in the lower center is the Sehome Hotel. The elevated roadway just above the five false-fronted buildings is Dock (Cornwall Ave.) Street. The tide is out; Whatcom Creek can be seen flowing through the mudflat where Georgia Pacific's facilities now (2002) stand. Occupying a bit of higher ground near the center of the photo is Morrison Mill. This also shows why the docks extended so far into the Bay before the dredging and filling of the 1920's took place. The curving railroad track is the mainline of the Great Northern Railroad which was removed sometime between 1913 and 1926. The two long docks that cross the GNRR are "C" and "G" Streets. The Roth Apartment Block can be seen where "G" meets Holly Street. The most northerly of the elevated roadways that extend from the cliff is Broadway. A better copy of the right-hand portion of this photo is #GB1197.0.
