| Description: Back caption: " Elsinore - 1907- Gawley Family. Lake Whatcom, Wash." A man, a woman and two girls are posed on a steam launch. The "Elsinore," built on Lake Washington in 1900, and operated by Capt. John Anderson for a time between Leschi and Madison Parks, was purchased by Capt. George Jenkins who operated it for many years on Lake Whatcom. The Gawley family: In 1897, the "Gawley Bros. of Lopez Island" commissioned the construction of the screw steamer, "Hector" which was put into use in upper Puget Sound as a chartered fishtrap tender. In 1907 Robert and Thomas Gawley were "Engineer" and "Marine Engineer" respectively, living in Bellingham with their families. Each had a child who was a student. In the 1910 census, Robert is an "Engineer" and Hector is listed as "Janitor." | |||

He is not listed in the 1901-02 directory. An American flag with 36 stars is flying from the larger building. An attached wharf is piled high with finished lumber. To service the anticipated rush of tourists, Van Horne, builder of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, ordered the construction of a series of hotel dining stations along the main line through the mountains. The first of these was Mount Stephen House in Field which was finished in 1886 at a cost of $20,000. Its interior was executed in high Victorian style -- complete with gas lights, heavy brocades, pump organ and caged canaries. | |||
