| Description: Back caption: "Nelson Bennett. Picture a gift by Galen Biery to R. G. G. 11-28-1957." This print is distictive: it's printed on a cavas textured paper and has been either hand colored or lithographed. Nelson Bennett was born October 14, 1843, Sutton, York Co., Ontario, Canada; married LOTTIE HUGGINS, September 02, 1881, Dillon, MT.; died in Tacoma on July 20, 1913. He had made a great deal of money through various enterprises including oil well, coal mine, and railroad construction. In 1888, while continuing to reside in Tacoma, he turned his attention to Whatcom and Skagit Counties. His interests were (as they had always been) in the money to be made from land development. He, Arthur Denny and Dexter Horton (both Seattle land developers) formed the Fairhaven Land Co. In his capacity as President, he extended the railroads, building The Fairhaven and Southern (F & S) line along the western edge of Whatcom County in 1887, thus the Great Northern was able to reach from Canada into the Puget Sound and the coal fields in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. It was he who purchases and then incorporated old Bellingham into Fairhaven. He hired the first editor of the Fairhaven Herald, forerunner of the Bellingham Herald. In 1891, he sold the F & S Railway to The Great Northern. In 1890, Bennett was President of Fairhaven Land Company, President of the F & S Railroad, President of Pacific Navigation Company, President Tacoma Hotel, and Vice President of Fairhaven Steel and Iron Company. | |||
