Description: Back caption: "C. T. Lathrop." In 1910, Cleveland Thayer Lathrop was a purchasing agent for the Pacific American Fisheries cannery. He lived at 1301 Taylor Avenue with his wife, Alcora. He was born in Michigan in 1847 and died in Bellingham in 1928. He, his wife, and their infant son are buried at Bayview Cemetery in Bellingham.

Description: Back caption: "John Green. Foreman at Alitak Cannery. Year 1947." In 1945, John A. Green and his wife Mona D. were living in Bellingham at 219 Hawthorne Road. He was President of Bellingham Warehouse Company and Executive Vice President of PAF (Pacific American Fisheries.) The Aleut fishing village where the cannery was located is now (2004) called Akhiok (UHK-hee-yok).

Description: Four young men. On the floor, in the foreground is a book titled "J. C. Sommerville Photographic Supplies." Each of the men is outfitted differently. The man in front, dressed in a circa 1900 straw bowler, stiff collar and three piece suit, has several photographs leaning against his feet and knees. The man on the left, wearing a felt bowler, wide tie, and stripped pants, is holding a guitar. The man in back is wearing a fedora and carrying and riding crop. The man on the right, wearing a plaid suit, a light felt fedora, is seated on an overturned chair and is holding a rafia covered bottle and a beer mug. An architectural theme has been painted on a canvas back cloth. Grass or straw coveres the ground.

Back caption same as attached note. Leonard U. Stenger was born in Oregon in 1867 to German parents. He married Rilla M. in 1888. In 1900, he was a clerk at the Fair Store. Ed (Edward) Edson was born in Iowa in 1860; he married Mary Hamburg in 1890. In 1900, Ed (Edward) Edson was a pharmacist in Whatcom County, living with his mother, Mary E., and his children Aggie and Gail.

Description: Frank W. Burpee was born in Canada in 1865. I immigrated to the USA in 1894. In 1900 he had been married 12 years, but was living as a boarder with D. W. Deming and eight other ment. By 1900, Burpee was Vice-President and co-owner of Burpee & Letson Ltd. The company operated a machine shop located on Harris Avenue, near 7th Street. In 1910, he was living with Lydia, his wife of 21 years, and his only child, 19-year-old Clarence B. Burpee. In 1920, with Clarence as President and General Manager, Burpee & Letson was manufacturing cannery and shingle mill machinery as well as "The Burpee Home Can Sealer." John H. Burpee was Superintendent. By 1930, Frank and Clarence are no longer in Bellingham, having set up Burpee Can Sealer Co. in Chicago in the mid-1920s. (They published "The Burpee Way of Home Canning and Cooking" in 1936. In 1930, John H. Burpee is the owner of Burpee Iron Works, still at the 614 Harris Avenue location. The families of Frank and Clarence lived at 132 S. Forest.

Description: Peter Denis, source of information on local coal mines. Reported to Biery that he was born in France in 1860, came to USA with his parents in 1863; came to Whatcom County in 1873 where his father worked in the coal mines and farmed. Denis went to work at Sehome mine in 1876, at age 13, as pump tender.

Clockwise from front: Jack Cole, Bill Herb, Conrad Barker, Tom Horn, Joe Kendall, Percy Heal, Bill Wetherell, Ralph Roberg, Jack Kellogg, Tony Barlowe, Lew Wallace, Charlie Beard, Rogan Jones, Earl Le Valley, Costen Carver, Lawson Turcotte, Percy Livesey, Henry Jukes." Based on the clothing style and the fact that one of the named members of this group died in 1939, this photo was probably taken in the mid to late 1930's, but published in the Herald in 1954. In 1954: Jack Cole was vice-president of Brown & Cole, Inc., while his father (and company founder) George Cole was president of the grocery chain. The Herb family was involved with Pacific Coasts Paper Mills of Washington which was purchased by Georgia Pacific in 1963. Conrad E. Barker was President of Bellingham Hardware Co. and Sec-Treas of Morse Hardware. Tom Horn was president of Horn's Inc., which operated a women's clothing store in Bellingham and clothing and fabric store in Mt. Vernon until the 1960's. Joe Kendall was Secretary-Treasurer of the Bellingham Securties Syndicate, a subsidiary of Bellingham Bay Improvement Company (BBIC) In 1910, Percy Heal was born in Farnham, England, in 1881 and died in Bellingham in June of 1939. At age 28, he was living with his widowed mother and working as a bank teller in Bellingham. In 1938, he was a Cashier at The Northwestern National Bank and his brother, Henry C. Heal, who died in 1958, was a Cashier at First National Bank of Bellingham. Bill Wetherell was, in 1953, advertising manager of Bellingham Publishing (publishers of the Bellingham Herald) and living with his wife Nelle V. at 337 High Street. He was born in Dewitt, MI, in 1880 and died in Bellingham in 1980. Ralph Roberg, in 1953, was Vice President of Puget SoundPulp & Timber and living with his wife Grace at 120 Hawthorne Road. He was born in Muskegee, OK, in 1886 and died in Bellingham in 1959. In 1954, Jack Kellogg (John A. Kellogg) practiced law at 221 E. Holly; he lived with his second wife Adna (nee Raley) at 417 N. Garden. He was born at Whatcom, W.T. (Bellingham) in 1871 to George Albert (lawyer and Fairhaven promoter) and Mary E. Kellogg. He got his B.S. from the University of Washington in 1892, his law degree from Northwestern University of Chicago in 1894. In 1905 he was elected to the Washington State Legislature from Steven County. He was Superior Court Judge in Whatcom County from 1907 to 1913. In 1908, he married Nellie J. McBride; she died in 1929. He was elected Mayor of Bellingham in 1924, unseating the former Normal School President E. T. Mathes, until 1933. Tony Marvin Barlowe was, in 1954, Vice President of Bellingham First Federal Savings & Loan Assn as well as a dentist. He lived with his wife Helen M. (nee Huntoon) at 800 15th Street, Bellingham. He was born in Illinois in 1876 and he died in Bellingham in 1956. Lewis Bruce Wallace was, in 1954, President of Wallace Chevrolet Co.; he lived with his wife Eula C. at 721 15th, Bellingham. He was born in Iowa in 1880 and died in 1961. Charles Stannard Beard was, in 1954 & 1938, President of Bellingham First Federal Savings & Loan Assn as well as President of Union Printing. In 1938, they had a home at 501 16th Street, Bellingham. In 1954, they were renting at 1224 Cornwall Avenue. Beard was born in Cincinnati, IN, in 1871 and died in Bellingham in 1955. Lafayette Rogan Jones, in 1954 & 1938, was President of KVOS Television, KGMI Radio and International Good Music, Inc. The last of these was a leader in the production of 'elevator music'. He and his wife Catherine lived at 1020 N. Garden. He was born in TN in 1895 and died in Bellingham in 1972. Earl E. Tart Le Valley was, in 1954 & 1938, President of Columbia Valley Lumber Co.
