Description: A Fokker prop plane with "Detroit Arctic Expedition , G.H. Wilkins, Commander" written on its side. Plane appears to be on ice with three heavily-clad people standing beside it with their gear strewn around it. Wilkins led three Detroit Arctic Expeditions in 1926, 1927, 1928; the objective was to fly from Pt. Barrow, Alaska across the polar sea to Spitzbergen, islands north of Norway. Only the last expedition succeeded. Photo is torn in half.

Description: Caption in ink on reverse: "Dobbs Studio Seattle 1937" Similar to photo 2213. Limited view of room with phtographic supplies on shelves lining the wall and on the floor. Open doorway to another room, possibly the darkroom of photo 2213. Beverley B. Dobbs became famous as an Alaskan Gold Rush photographer. Biery met Dobbs in 1930. He began working for Dobbs as he photographed fish processing at PAF and then learned motion picture and photographic techniques from Dobbs in his Seattle studio. See /cpnws/biery/bierybio.htm

Description: Caption on back in ink: "Mr. E.B. Deming. Miss Catherine Wade Smith. Mrs Rogan Jones." "Biery" is written in pencil in lower right corner. Deming and Smith are leaning against a portico with the Bay in the background. She is looking at him and holds a violin and bow and is stylishly dressed; he wears a heavy overcoat and looks intently at the camera. There is a horseshoe attached at the top of the portico post they lean against. Catherine Wade Smith married Rogan Jones, founder of KVOS. E.B. Deming was president of Pacific American Fisheries.

Description: Unidentified imposing, multi-story sandstone building with tower and gables. It is the second Whatcom County Courthouse, built in 1890 and used until 1950; it was later demolished. It was located on property bounded by Ellsworth and Farragut Streets. Also included with the photo is a white 5" x 8" card that is inscribed to Mr. L. P. White and says: "You are respectfully invited to be present at the execution of Alfred Hamilton, Friday, May 23, 1902, at the Whatcom County Court House at 6 o'clock a.m. W.I. Brisbin, Sheriff. Present this Card - Not Transferable."

Description: A pen and ink drawing, probably taken from a book, with caption on front: "Reynaud's Optical Theater." A man manipulates two circular drums on a flat surface with optical equipment projecting a skit on a screen with an audience seated on the other side. Emile Reynaud (1844-1918) invented the praxinoscope that enabled the projection of images on a screen, creating the illusion of movement - an early form of animation. His optical theater, invented in 1889, was a big praxinoscope, a true precursor to film.

Description: Two paper sheets that have scotchtape marks on them. One is a Time Card for the Steamer Regie that ran on Lake Whatcom connecting with a stage (probably a horse and wagon) for Wickersham. Regie with a repution as a smuggler on the Sound, was sold to Yorkston and Johnson in 1895 and operated on Lake Whatcom until 1900 when it was traded for a lumber mill owned by Brannian. It burned in 1903. The second sheet is a poem "The Regie of Blue Canyon" by Constance Bennett Fouty.

Description: Three glossy prints of different flying machines. One has caption printed on front: "Henson's Flying Machine" and " J. Dalzeil S. Phig" and typed on reverse: "Henson's Flying Machine, 1843. Swoop of machine 250 feet." The second has caption printed on front: "Luna's Machine" and typed on reverse: "Luna's Flying Machine, 1670" The third pictures ten different early flying machines. Typed on reverse: "No.1-Flying globe designed by Blainville, an engineer...No.2-Abbe Molari's Montgolfier, which was to have ascended in July, 1784...No.3-Balloon with reversed parachute, invented by Henin. No.4-Navigable balloon invented in 1816 by Sir george Cayley. No.5-Samson's aerostat, furnished with fires made of feathers...No.6-A machine the designer of which is unknown. No.7-An aerial ship called L'Aigle, designed by Lennox...No.8-The Systems Petin, made public in 1850. No.9-Aerostat of M. Julien...No.10-An aerial contrivance of M.Heille made public in 1850..."

Description: Caption on reverse in pencil: "After the fire." Shell of burned Fairhaven High School with five unidentified young men standing in foreground in front of it. One wears a letter sweater with "F" on it. All hold books. Fairhaven High School burned on December 31, 1935. Fairhaven Middle School is on the same site today. It was the second Fairhaven High School; the first was between Larabee and Donovan at 20th-21st Streets. It was built in 1890 and used as a grammar school at the same time. It was torn down in 1919.

School is clapboard bungalow with windows across the front, a bell tower, front gable and flagpole on roof. Sign in gable says: No. 67 -- 19 Columbia Valley 19. On reverse in ink: "1914." Snow is on the ground. According to sheet attached the teacher pictured is Ellen Booman Nelson who began teaching there in 1912. Accoring to "Reflections from the Heart of a Small Community" this was the second Columbia Valley school built in 1913; it was used until 1941. See also photo 2250, 2252.

Description: A teacher standing with twelve students of various ages in front of a simple, small wooden schoolhouse with a window and door on the front and two windows visible on one side. Written on front of photo: "Compliments of E.V. Booman 1912" She taught at Columbia Valley School starting in 1912 and is also in photos 2250 and 2251. According to "Reflections from the Heart of a Small Community," this was the first Columbia Valley school, a one-room shack, built in 1893 and used until 1913 when a better building was built - photo 2251.
