Description: Unidentified school group standing in six rows on steps of a building. Girls are in the first three rows, boys the other three behind them. Appear to be twins dressed identically in the first row. Many girls wear light pinafores over their dresses. Several boys wear fancy collars with bow ties. Description: Larrabee Grammar School, an imposing three story (with daylight basement level), dormers, and two towers with many-stepped entrances below them. A few students and an adult stand on the front steps. The school was built in 1890 and located between 20th and 21st Streets and Larrabee and Donovan Avenues. Fairhaven High School occupied the upper floors until the new Fairhaven High School was built in the early 1900's. Then it was used as a grade school unitl the present Larrabee School at 18th and McKenzie was built. It was torn down in 1919.

Description: Caption on reverse in ink: "This school house was the first in Whatcom County - which was later divided into three counties - now Whatcom, Skagit & San Juan. Miss Isabella Eldridge was the teacher. Daughter of Hon. Edward Eldridge - later member of the Constitution Convention. This was taken in 1874 -- Mrs. Roth's" and stamped in ink: "Clyde Banks - Kodak Finishing - Enlarging - Views - Bellingham, Wash." A primitive, one story, barn-like wooden structure with a door in the front and two six over six windows on the side with about twenty five students, both boys and girls of varying ages, and a teacher stand casually in front. The teacher is holding what appears to be a long stick or cane.

Description: Caption on reverse in ink: "Chapter XVII - The Central School Buildings on Seventeenth street (Dupont) between I and J streets. The structure to the right was started in 1884, the second one in 1889, for grade school. Later they became the Whatcom High School Buildings. The Roeder grade school stands on this site today." Same information also typed on paper and included with photo. Small address label in lower left corner on reverse: " Mrs. Edward Edson, 312 Mt. Baker Apartments, Bellingham, Washington." Two identical, white clapboard, two story rectangular structures with five windows on each story on the side and three windows on the second story in the front. Two doors are on the first story. Each has a small bell tower on the front of its roof. Several students are gathered on the front steps of the right building; fewer students are visible on the steps of the building on the left. A fence and sidewalk border both buildings and houses are visible behind and beyond the schools. A tall telephone or electric pole stands at the corner in front of the building on the right side.

Description: Caption typed on separate paper and attached to photo: The first survey made of the town of Sehome, Washington Territory, Bellingham Bay - May 8th, A.D. 1858. Recorder John W. Lysle - Father of Hallie Lysle Campbell" and on small address label in lower left corner on reverse: "Mrs. Edward Edson - 312 Mount Baker Apts., Bellingham, Washington" Shows platted streets of Sehome from Vol. 1, Pg. 1 of Photq. records from the Kroll Map Co., Seattle. According to "Whatcom County in Maps 1832-1937," none of the street names on this 1858 map have survived. Front Street is Railroad Avenue, Main Street is State Street, Washington Street is Forest Street and jackson Street is Garden Street. The cross streets, then named for local and state people are now names of trees: Maple, Pine, Chestnut, Laurel, etc.
