In the middle ground beyond the trestle is the Spokane County Courthouse, an imposing building with a central tower and five visible turrets around it. It resembles 16th century chateaux in the Loire Valley of France. It was designed by W.A. Ritchie who won the competition opened in 1893 for a courthouse/jail design. He had designed public buildings and courthouses in Seattle, Bellingham, Port Townsend, Vancouver and Olympia. Opened in 1895, it is located on the north bank of the Spokane River, controversial due to it not being located in the rural county.
