The LGBTQ Safe Zone Program is a visible network of volunteers who are committed to creating a community of respect and dignity for students, staff, and faculty who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning. Safe Zone makes it possible to easily identify allies at Western-individuals who are committed to creating an environment in which all people are free to thrive academically, professionally and personally.
This training is an interactive 3 hour long training with a mixture of lecture style, small group and peer facilitated learning. This training will encourage participants to engage in dialogue with other participants on LGBTQ issues and topics.
***To WWU Staff: By registering for a Safe Zone training session, you are indicating that you have discussed with your supervisor the time commitments and responsibilities associated with becoming a Safe Zone ally and have secured his/her approval to serve in this capacity.*** |

Learning Outcomes: *You will be able to explain the fundamental stages of gender and sexual identity development. *You will be able to apply basic terms and information about the LGBTQ population to your role as an ally. *You will be able to implement facilitation techniques in conversations when approached as an ally. *You will be able to utilize the resources that support your role as an ally. *You will know how to create and promote a safe zone. *You will recognize what LGBTQ issues create personal discomfort for you and understand ways to manage your uneasiness. |
