May 13 Gordon Sandison Memorial Lecture
 

The annual Gordon Sandison Memorial Lecture will feature guest speaker Deborah Avant, lecturing on "What Does Private Security in Iraq Mean for US Democracy at Home?" Avant is a professor of Political Science and Director of International Studies and the Center for Research on International and Global Studies (RIGS) at the University of California, Irvine. Her current research focuses on how the U.S. government’s use of private security has affected democratic processes in the United States, how private actors conceptualize and implement security in weak states and the way different non-state actors govern on the global stage.

Cosmos in the Planetarium
 

Carl Sagan's famous television series about the Universe will show at WWU's Planetarium. Learn about the history of our planet, the origin of life, the life cycle of stars and a host of other astronomical topics. The same episode will play on Mondays and Wednesdays, with a new episode every week. The series will not be shown Monday and Wednesday, March 24 and 26.

Exhibitions and Dancers Featured in Western Gallery
 

The Western Gallery, the Department of Art and the Dance Program at WWU is presenting a collaborative exhibition and dance residency in the Western Gallery throughout spring quarter. The collaboration features a photography exhibit by Dianne Kornberg, performances by Montréal Danse, a student-organized exhibition and interdisciplinary talks. Western Gallery hours will be modified for this collaboration and are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 2-18, noon to 4 p.m. on April 19, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 2-3 and 9-10. The Gallery will resume normal hours of operations on April 21 and will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

'The Human Comedy'
 

WWU's Department of Theatre Arts will present the opera "The Human Comedy" May 21-31. The opera follows the lives of the Macauley family during World War II. 14-year-old Homer Macauley comes of age as he delivers telegrams bringing news of sons killed in action to his idyllic community of Ithaca, California. "The Human Comedy" will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, May 21-24, and Tuesday through Saturday, May 27-31, as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.

For a parking permit or information, please stop at the south campus Visitor Center, open from 7:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays. There is a $2 hourly charge for parking from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. No permit is required in (south campus) gravel C lots between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. weekdays, or on weekends. There is a $1 an hour charge for parking after 5 p.m. and on weekends in designated lots, which have blue machines that accept cash, coins, or credit/debit cards. There is no additional charge in these lots for those displaying a valid parking pass or a Viking XPress bus pass, with the exception of lot 6V (Viking Union) where payment is required at all times. Parking meters at various campus locations cost $2 an hour, 24 hours/7 days.
