BELLINGHAM – Konrad Steffen, who has studied the impact of climate on polar and high alpine regions for three decades, will be the next Distinguished Lecture Series speaker at Western Washington University.

Steffen, director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, will discuss “Changes in the Arctic Ice Cover – Greenland Ice Sheet and Surrounding Oceans” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 on the Performing Arts Center Mainstage at Western.

The lecture is free, but tickets are required.

Steffen, a professor and Fellow at the University of Colorado, has conducted research in the Canadian Arctic, Switzerland and China. In 1990, he set up a research station, known as Swiss Camp, on a platform drilled into Greenland’s ice sheet.

His observations there, confirmed with satellite imagery, show an expanding melt area, including unprecedented melt in recent years, especially 2002 and 2005. NASA images show melting to a record elevation of 6,500 feet as well as melting in areas where it had not occurred since satellites began mapping the ice sheet in 1978.

Steffen’s findings have appeared in scientific journals as well as BBC-TV reports and a 2005 New Yorker magazine series on global climate change. His work, together with that of his students and associates, has heightened knowledge of arctic climate, warming and melting dynamics.

Free tickets will be available for faculty, staff and students with Western IDs at the WWU Box Office beginning Jan. 3. Community tickets, with a limit of two per person, will be available beginning Jan. 13. Phone orders will be accepted during box office business hours at (360) 650- 6146, or ticket requests can be faxed to: (360) 650-7955. Both phone and fax ticket requests will be held at the PAC ticket will-call window for pick-up. University Box Office hours: noon to 6 p.m., Monday – Friday.

A free shuttle will make continuous trips to the PAC from lot 12A at Fairhaven College beginning at 5:30 p.m. the evening of the lecture. Disability accommodations are available upon request and advance notice is requested. Please contact Special Events at (360) 650-7545.
