BELLINGHAM – The Western Gallery will present its first exhibition of 2006, “Keys to the Koop: Humor and Satire in Contemporary Printmaking,” Monday Jan. 9 through March 11 at Western Washington University. The exhibition will feature the work of 16 British and American printmakers – ranging from early pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg to Postmodern artists Jeff Koons and Lorna Simpson – who find humor and satire in contemporary art, fashion, food and popular culture. “Keys to the Koop” will conclude a national tour with its exhibition at the Western Gallery. Sarah Clark-Langager, director of the Western Gallery, said the exhibition includes more than 60 works from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his family foundation. Schnitzer is scheduled to lecture about the exhibition at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12 in the Western Gallery. His talk is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception from 4 – 5:30 p.m. “I am so delighted to have this work [at WWU] so that people of all ages can experience the artist’s voice, which ranges from whimsical humor to ironic satire,” said Schnitzer. “Humor has been a popular theme in printmaking for centuries and is a cohesive thread through my collections.” The mission of the Western Gallery is to provide diverse experiences in the visual arts for the university community and surrounding region, while providing a point of reference to the national and international art scene and a venue for artists to express social commentary. Clark-Langager said one contemporary trend is for artists to draw upon literary conventions – such as irony, wit and sarcasm – as a way to express their social comments. There is no charge for admission to the Western Gallery, which is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays as well as noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The Gallery will be closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 16 and on President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 20.
