BELLINGHAM — Western Washington University will host four award-winning children’s authors at a reception Friday, Feb. 24 and at the third annual Bond Children’s Literature Conference on Saturday, Feb. 25. “This is an opportunity to meet and listen to four notable authors and illustrators whose work has not only been recognized by receipt of a number of awards but is also well received by readers from early elementary school to adult,” said Nancy Johnson, WWU English professor and organizer of the conference. “We believe this conference will inspire those who attend to read, write and teach with deeper appreciation and joy.” The events are open to any adults interested in children’s literature. The reception to meet the authors, sponsored by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Woodring College of Education and Western Libraries, is free and runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, in the Wilson Library 4th floor Reading Room. RSVPs are requested by Feb. 20 to Connie.Mallison@wwu.edu. The conference, sponsored by the English Department, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall and will include presentations from the authors, lunch, book sales and autograph sessions. The event is named in honor of Guy L. and Fredericka H. Bond to acknowledge their commitment to reading education. The authors are: · Emily Arnold McCully, winner of the 1993 Caldecott Award for “Mirette on the High Wire” and illustrator of over 100 books for children, garnering awards and starred reviews for illustration and writing and appealing to readers of all ages. Her work ranges from wordless picture books to easy readers to historical fiction, including the well-known wordless picture book “Picnic” (an ALA Notable Book and winner of a Christopher Award). · Deborah Wiles, a 2005 National Book Award finalist for “Each Little Bird that Sings” and recipient of the Ezra Jack Keats/New York Public Library award for best new picture book writer for “Freedom Summer.” Wiles’ books also include “Love, Ruby Lavender,” recognized as an ALA Notable Children’s Book, and “One Wide Sky.” · Laurie Halse Anderson, recipient of the 2000 Printz honor for young adult literature for “Speak,” and author of “Catalyst,” “Fever 1793,” and “Prom,” which was selected as a 2005 BookSense Top Ten Pick. Anderson has also written four picture books and 12 books in the “Wild at Heart” series. · Jon Agee, author/illustrator of numerous humorous picture books including “Terrific,” one of 10 New York Times Best Illustrated Books of 2005, “Milo’s Hat Trick” and “The Incredible Painting of Felix Clousseau.” Agee’s love of language has resulted in several books of wordplay, including “Go Hang a Salami!” “I'm a Lasagna Hog!” and other books of palindromes.
