Composer-Pianist to Teach, Perform at WWU May 4-6

BELLINGHAM – Logan Skelton, a composer and college educator as well as a performing pianist, will present a Sanford Piano Series concert, among several events at Western Washington University from May 4-6.

Skelton will perform a solo concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 5 and with Jennifer Goltz in a song recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6. Both concerts will be in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Concert Hall. Tickets for the May 5 concert range in price from $8-15. They are on sale at the WWU Box Office at (360) 650-6146, at the Community Food Co-op, Village Books and online at www.tickets.wwu.edu. The May 6 concert is free.

His May 5 Sanford Piano Series recital will include works by Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner (arranged by Liszt), Bela Bartok and Skelton’s own “Civil War Variations.”

As part of his WWU residency, Skelton will present a lecture entitled “The Wedding of Tune and Text” at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 4 and will teach a master class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6. Both events, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the PAC Concert Hall.

Skelton has performed throughout the world, playing a repertoire that stretches from the classics to works of his own composition. A champion of 20th century music, Skelton has received critical acclaim for his collaborations with George Crumb, John Corigliano, Bright Sheng and William Bolcom, among others. Skelton, who teaches piano performance at the University of Michigan, has been featured on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

The Sanford Piano Series, now in its third year at Western, is sponsored by the Whatcom Community Foundation’s Spirit Fund. Proceeds from this performance support the music department’s Arthur Hicks and Ford Hill piano scholarship funds.

Free parking is available in the south campus C lots and a free shuttle runs between Fairhaven College and the Performing Arts Center for the Sanford Piano Series event. Patrons who purchase event tickets in advance may also purchase a permit for $2 to park in lot 14G during the event.
