BELLINGHAM – The famed Yale Symphony Orchestra will perform at Western Washington University’s Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 8 p.m. Friday, May 26 in the PAC Mainstage Theatre.

This concert, part of a five-city, 40th Anniversary Tour of the Pacific Northwest, is free and open to the public.

The Yale Symphony Orchestra is one of the country’s most accomplished undergraduate orchestras. The New York Times has hailed the orchestra as “a profusion of talent.”

“This concert is a wonderful opportunity to hear a first-rate orchestra comprised entirely of liberal arts majors. Yale has no undergraduate music performance major, so this group is a testament to the high level of talent and interest in music across all academic disciplines,” said Grant Donnellan, an alumnus of Yale’s Graduate School of Music and assistant professor of Music at Western.

“The Yale School of Music is one of the finest in the country, if not the entire world,” said Walter Schwede, a violinist and WWU associate professor of music. “The skill level of this orchestra is on par with some professional orchestras, andthe audience will indeed see players who are not only at the top of their playing but also players at the beginning of wonderful careers.”

In the concert, Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fifth Symphony will be complemented by works from Yale composers. Eric Nathan, Yale class of 2006, premieres his “Collage Ritmico.” Faculty member and Pulitzer-Prize winning composer Charles Ives will perform one of his “Holiday” pieces, “Decoration Day,” in honor of Memorial Day.

This year marks Toshiyuki Shimada’s first as music director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra. He is also music director and chief creative officer of the Trinity Music Partners, LLC, in New York, which holds the worldwide rights to the Vatican Library Music Collection. He also is principal conductor of the Vienna Modern Masters, in Vienna, Austria.

The Yale Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1965 by a small group of Yale students who felt a need for an ensemble devoted to the performance of the orchestral repertoire. Now celebrating the completion of its fourth decade, the Yale Symphony continues to provide an important venue for performances of new music. The Yale Symphony recently performed in Portugal, Korea and Central Europe, including Vienna, Prague and Budapest. The orchestra also tours domestically, and has made appearances in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

“Western, and this region, is indeed lucky to hear such an ensemble, and I anticipate great interest in this upcoming performance,” Schwede said.

Patrons who purchase event tickets in advance may also purchase a permit for $2 to park in lot 14G during the event.
