BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s annual summer dance concert will, for the first time, be presented on the Mainstage of WWU’s Performing Arts Center (PAC) in a series of four performances. The concerts will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, July 27-29, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, July 29, on the PAC Mainstage. The annual event is the culmination of an intensive six-week dance program that will feature original choreography and performances by visiting faculty from Montréal Danse as well as emerging artists from Western’s Dance program. Nolan Dennett, director of WWU’s Dance program, will perform, along with Sylvain LaFortune of Montréal Danse. They will perform some of their own works as well as dances that have been choreographed by Western students Amanda Brings, Amelia Henderson and Jessica Kruger-Stahl. “Mature artists working with emerging artists – I don’t think there is any pleasure in the world greater than that,” Dennett said. “I have absolute confidence that something wonderful, heartfelt, meaningful and maybe even something ridiculous will happen.” Kathy Casey, artistic director of Montréal Danse and a visiting instructor at WWU, has choreographed a piece for the concert titled “Hole in the Road.” “It is looking at those moments when all of a sudden the road seems to fall into the abyss. Sometimes they’re small holes, like regret or infidelity. I’m also playing with some bigger holes, like addiction, emotional illness or some kind of emotional disturbance,” said Casey. Casey’s Montréal Danse partner Sylvain LaFortune has reconstructed “What You Can’t See,” an original work of choreography, for the WWU concert. “What I want to explore is the idea that all our previous experiences influence our behavior, for the better or for the worse,” LaFortune said. In addition to Dennett, Casey and LaFortune, dancers will include Western dance faculty member Susan Haines and students in WWU’s summer dance program. Tickets for the dance concert cost $8 for students, $9 for seniors and WWU staff and $11 for general admission. Tickets are available through the Western Box Office at (360) 650-6146 and at the door.
