BELLINGHAM – Members of the community, students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend Western Washington University’s Really Big Weekend celebration – a community open house – Friday, Nov. 3 to Sunday, Nov. 5.
All are welcome at a family-friendly spirit rally with fireworks and live music Friday night. For more information, visit http://www.wwualumni.com.
Other highlights of the weekend include football and volleyball games, Planetarium shows and a series of faculty lectures, environmental plays, alternative vehicle displays and departmental open houses across campus.
Events will take place rain or shine. Parking permits will not be required, unless otherwise indicated, Friday night, Nov. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 5. Please observe reserved parking signs, including disabled.

The Western Associated Students Bookstore will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, selling WWU clothing and gift items for the whole family.
The Wade King Student Recreation Center will be open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Free tours will be available every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Discounted day passes providing full use of the center will cost $3.50 and be available at the door.

Friday, Nov. 3
- 9 a.m. Fourth Annual Senior Breakfast in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room. Free to WWU Seniors, $15 for others.
- Noon to 5 p.m. Teaching Scholarship Day hosted by the College of Business and Economics and the Center for Excellence in Management Education. A luncheon at the Wade King Student Recreation Center will begin at noon and cost $25. Faculty members George Zhang and Zite Hutton will be honored as Distinguished Research and Distinguished Teaching fellows. The afternoon program from 1:30 to 5 p.m. in Parks Hall is free and will feature forums presented by students, faculty and industry partners. - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Shoot the Family” in the Western Gallery. Although sensational, the title of this exhibition actually refers to a photography exhibit of 16 contemporary artists from North America, Europe and Asia, portraying members of their families.
- 5:30 p.m. Distinguished Alumni Dinner in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room. The cost is $40. The WWU Alumni Association will honor the 2006 Distinguished Alumni: Horst-Otto Gerberding (‘79), vice chairman of Symrise GmbH & Co. KG in Hozminden, Germany; Raynald Samoa (‘94), medical doctor at UCLA Medical Center; and Gerald Webster (‘80), professor and chair of the geology department at the University of Alabama. The Distinguished Lifetime Award recipient is Wendy Wollam Scherrer (‘76), executive director for the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association.
- 7 and 8:30 p.m. Planetarium Show in Haggard Hall 313 (enter from Red Square). Presentation includes a fantasy rocket trip among the stars, swirling galaxies, and legends of starlore. Not recommended for children under 8 years of age. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the event. There is no admittance after the beginning of the show. Free, but space is limited.
- 7 p.m. A family-friendly Western Spirit Rally in the C parking lots at Fairhaven College, featuring live music, sweets and hot apple cider. Fireworks begin at 7:30 p.m. with a roaring bonfire following. Sponsored by the Alumni Association.
- 7:30 p.m. Jacques Despres and an ensemble of WWU faculty will present an evening of intimate chamber music featuring works by Dvorak, Mozart and Kraus at the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. Tickets are available at the WWU Box Office: $23 general; $20 WWU faculty and staff, WWU Alumni Association members, and seniors (60+); $16 students (all ages with valid student ID), youth under 18.
Saturday, Nov. 4
- 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Shuttle service will be available to and from the C parking lots on the south end of campus.
- 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information booths in Red Square and Haskell Plaza will provide complete schedules with locations for lectures and open houses.
- 10 to 11:30 a.m. Welcome Reception in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room will provide an overview of people, places and events at WWU, featuring a continental breakfast and displays.
- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Departmental Open Houses will provide a chance to see the world in 3-D, jam with disc jockeys, watch robots at work, learn about languages and share the experience of dinosaurs. Demonstrations and displays will be offered by a variety of academic departments and programs across campus. - 5:30 to 8 p.m. “Under the Mango Tree: Stories continued...”, a Filipino Heritage Dinner in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room, presented by the Filipino American Student Association in honor of Filipino History Month, featuring live folk dances, cultural music and traditional dishes. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the WWU Box Office: $10 for students, $15 general admission.
- 7 p.m. Women’s Volleyball versus Saint Martin’s University at Carver Gym. Tickets will be available at the door: $5 adults, $4 students and seniors, $3 for WWU students.
- 8 p.m. Author and public radio humorist David Sedaris on the Performing Arts Center Mainstage. Tickets are available at the WWU Box Office: $30 general, $20 students.
Sunday, Nov. 5
- 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tour and service project at Sehome Hill Arboretum Learning Center. Tour the Arboretum with David Engebretson of the Geology Department and dig in with a service project to improve trails near the Center. Space is limited to 25 participants.
- 1 p.m. Golden Key International Honor Society Induction in Viking Union 565, recognizing juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent of their class.
