BELLINGHAM – Roya Hakakian, a memoirist and a national newspaper columnist, a fellow at Yale University’s Whitney Humanities Center and a founding member of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, will speak at Western Washington University at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15.

The free talk, to be held in Fraser Hall 4, is part of the Western Reads program, sponsored jointly by the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and New Student Programs.

Hakakian also will give a talk called “Seeing Past the Mushroom Cloud: How to think about Iran despite the Nuclear Debacle,” at the World Issues Forum at noon Nov. 15, in the Fairhaven Auditorium.

Her books will be available for purchase and inscription after both lectures.

Her book “Journey from the Land of No” describes growing up as an Iranian Jew in Tehran during and after the Islamic Revolution. She also has written columns about Iran for the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.

The Western Reads program selects a book each year to promote intellectual engagement, conversation and community – goals at the heart of the University’s liberal arts tradition.

This year’s selection is the graphic novel “Persepolis,” about author Marjane Satrapi’s childhood in Iran. Hakakian and Satrapi are contemporaries whose works deal with similar experiences and themes.
