Western Washington University’s Board of Trustees on Friday appointed Trustee Phil Sharpe to chair a committee that will lead the search for a new University president.

WWU President Karen W. Morse announced on Sept. 21 that she would be retiring as president of the University on Sept. 1, 2008. Morse is beginning her 15th year as president at Western.

The trustees approved a resolution that Sharpe will serve as chair of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee, which will lead the presidential search process. Sharpe will be providing the trustees with recommendations on the committee, such as size and composition, at a special board meeting at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct 22 at the board room in Old Main 340 on campus. Individual appointments to the committee will be made at a later date.

The resolution passed by the board states that the presidential search be conducted “on a basis that is inclusive and transparent, while maintaining appropriate candidate confidentiality.” The final decision on selection of Western’s next president will be made by the Board of Trustees, based on recommendations from the search advisory committee.

Board Chair Kevin Raymond said that the University is now seeking a consultant to help the committee with the process. The consultant will undertake an assessment of Western to help determine the qualities in a new president that will best serve Western at this time in its history. The search consultant will also help the university identify strong candidates for the presidency.

Raymond said the board has begun the process of seeking input from campus and community stakeholders, with discussions started with faculty, students, classified and professional staff.

The trustees also heard from former WWU Trustee Craig Cole, president and chief executive officer of Brown & Cole Stores of Bellingham, who led the search that resulted in the hiring of President Morse in 1993. Cole, who now is a University of Washington regent and has been involved in a presidential search there as well, provided the trustees with a range of advice, including the importance of confidentiality in searches; how to work with search consultants; considerations for determining the size and composition of the search advisory committee; remaining flexible enough to find the best possible candidate and the importance of seeking campus and community participation in the process.
