The community is invited to share their viewpoints at a forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 as part of the search process for a new president at Western Washington University. The forum, free and open to the public, will be held at the Bellingham Public Library Lecture Room, 210 Central Ave.

The forum will be facilitated by WWU President Emeritus Kenneth Mortimer. Residents of Bellingham and Whatcom and Skagit counties are encouraged to attend the forum.

WWU President Karen W. Morse announced last fall that she will retire as president of the University on Sept. 1, 2008. Morse is in her 15th year as president at Western.

“Western is an integral part of the community and it is important to receive feedback from community members on qualities they would like to see in the next University president,” said WWU Trustee Phil Sharpe, chair of Western’s Presidential Search Advisory Committee.

Members of Western’s Presidential Search Advisory Committee will be at the forum.

The following questions will be posed at the forum:

  •  What are the most significant opportunities and challenges the next president must address within the first two years of her or his presidency?
  • What must the new president accomplish in the next three to five years?
  • What personal characteristics does the new president need to have?
  • What professional experiences must the next president have to be a good fit with the needs of the university at this time?

Those unable to attend the forum are encouraged to submit input to the WWU web site dedicated to the presidential search at http://www.wwu.edu/presidentsearch/

Four public forums already have been held on Western’s campus to receive input as part of the search process.

The Presidential Search Advisory Committee will work with consultants Greenwood & Associates to conduct a national search for candidates. The committee is strictly advisory to the Board of Trustees, which will make the final selection of a new president.
