BELLINGHAM – For the second time in three years, Western Washington University has been chosen to host the prestigious American College Dance Festival (ACDF). Hundreds of student dancers from college dance departments around the nation will be on campus for four days of workshops, master classes, concerts and performances from March 23 to 26. Festival coordinator Nolan Dennett, director of WWU’s dance program, said that “over the past 5 years Western has taken its place alongside Cornish and the University of Washington for cutting-edge experimentation and quality training in Time Based Art” and that WWU’s selection as ACDF host is a “reflection of the growth and strength of our dance program.” Several WWU choreographers have been finalists in recent competitions. Faculty and student performances are the core of the American College Dance Festival, though registration is open to anyone interested in a variety of dance topics and techniques. The four-day festival will feature a number of concerts and events that are open to the general public. “Northwest Edge” – a concert featuring emerging talent from Seattle, Portland and other northwest venues – will launch the public portion of festival at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23. Tickets cost $6 for students, $8 for seniors and WWU employees and $10 general admission. “Dance for the Camera” is an adjudicated film festival representing dance art film and dance documentary. It will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25 and at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the Pickford Dreamspace at 1318 Bay Street. Tickets cost $7 for general admission, $5 for the matinee and $4.50 for Whatcom Film Association members (this event is co-sponsored by the Whatcom Film Association.) “Gala Concert” – a culminating concert of the top ten adjudicated entries from this year’s event – will conclude the American College Dance Festival at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 26 in the WWU Performing Arts Center Mainstage. Tickets cost $6 for students, $8 for seniors and WWU employees and $10 general admission. The function of the American College Dance Festival Association, which includes ten regions, is to provide the opportunity for students to experience the diversity of dance programs and styles, and to have their work evaluated by dance professionals. Tickets to the ACDF’s public events are available through the WWU Box Office, at (360) 650-6146, or at the door prior to the event.
