BELLINGHAM- Critically acclaimed soprano and Western Washington University alumna Erin Wall will present a benefit concert to honor Virginia Hunter at the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 7. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $10 for students, and are on sale at the WWU box office, (360) 650-6146.

Wall will be accompanied by Jeffrey Gilliam, WWU associate professor of music and member of the piano faculty.

Wall is a quickly rising star, garnering accolades as Donna Anna in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2004-2005 season production of “Don Giovanni,” plus guest appearances with major opera companies throughout Europe and Canada, and in recital under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation.

Virginia Hunter has taught voice as an adjunct member of Western’s music department since 1989. Proceeds from Erin Wall’s recital will establish a vocal performance scholarship in Virginia Hunter’s name to benefit Western students.

“Virginia Hunter had a huge impact on me while at Western,” said Wall, who graduated from Western in 1998 with a degree in vocal performance. “This is my way of showing my appreciation for the inspiration and guidance she gave to me and hundreds of other Western students during her tenure in the music department.”

For the past three seasons Wall has been a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Center for American Artists. She has appeared on its mainstage as Marguerite in “Faust,” the First Lady in “Die Zauberflote” and Gerhilde in “Die Walkure.” She currently has engagements to perform and appear with the London, Vancouver, San Francisco and Chicago Symphony orchestras.

Among her recent awards and career grants are the 2004 ARIA award from the ARIA Foundation, a Richard Tucker Award (2004), and a Sara Tucker Study Grant (2002) from the Richard Tucker Foundation.

Born to American parents in Calgary, Alberta, Wall studied at the Vancouver Academy of Music throughout her childhood. She holds degrees from Western Washington University and Rice University. She also studied voice at the Aspen Music Festival and the Music Academy of the West, where she was a student of Marilyn Horne.
