BELLINGHAM – Jean Kilbourne, internationally recognized for her pioneering work on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in advertising, will be the keynote speaker Saturday, April 30 for the third annual Western Women’s Festival at Western Washington University.

Kilbourne will speak on “The Naked Truth: Advertising’s Image of Women” at 11 a.m. in Miller Hall 163. Her talk is free and open to the public.

A widely published writer and speaker, Kilbourne has twice been named "Lecturer of the Year" by the National Association of Campus Activities. Publishers Weekly called her book “Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel,“ (Touchstone November 2000) "a profound work that is required reading for informed consumers." It won the Distinguished Publication Award from the Association for Women in Psychology.

She is also known for her award-winning documentaries “Killing Us Softly,” “Slim Hopes” and “Calling the Shots.” She is a visiting research scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women and lives in Boston, Mass.

The Western Women’s Festival is coordinated by the WWU Prevention and Wellness Services Women’s Empowerment And Violence Education (WEAVE). This free, all-day event offers workshops about issues important to women, including the history of the women’s movement, communication, sexual health and body image. The festival, to be held at the Viking Union, is open to the public.
