BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University will join Bellingham in celebrating the eighth annual Bike to Work and School Day on Friday, May 20 to encouragebicycling as a healthy, environmentally friendlyform of transportation.

Western’s two celebration stations, in Red Square and at the Wade King Student Recreation Center, will offer prize drawings, coffee, water, juice and snacks donated by Bellingham bakeries and restaurants. Cyclists who stop at a WWU station between 7:30 and 10 a.m. will receive a flashing light reflector, while supplies last. There will also be reflective helmet stickers, wheel reflectors and reflective arm bands given to cyclists.

"Bike to Work and School Day is a great opportunity for Western to celebrate and reward student, faculty and staff bicycle commuters and to connect with the entire Bellingham community,” said Carol Berry, WWU Alternative Transportation coordinator.

Last year, more than 2,600 people locally left their cars at home to participate in the event. Other celebration stations will be located around the city at Whatcom Community College, downtown Bellingham, Historic Fairhaven, Barkley Village, Samish Way at Diego’s, Birchwood, Sunnyland, Dupont, Shuksan Middle School, Civic Field, Squalicum Harbor and Bellingham Technical College. The HUB Community bike shop will host a pancake breakfast during the morning commute at their celebration station on the South Bay Trail.

All Bike to Work and School Day participants are invited to Boundary Bay Brewery from 5 to 7 p.m. May 20 for prizes, awards and dancing.
