Hurricane Relief at WWU Oct. 15-22
Week of Events Part of ‘Western Cares – Hurricane Relief’

BELLINGHAM – A number of events will be held at Western Washington University the week of Oct. 15-22 to help the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita as well as to highlight issues raised by the devastating hurricanes.

Seventy-five percent of all donations collected from campus relief efforts will be directed to the national American Red Cross Disaster Fund for hurricane relief efforts, while 25 percent will be directed to the Mount Baker Chapter to replace funds used for hurricane relief and to assist families in the community who lose their homes to fires, floods and other disasters.

Events during the week, part of the “Western Cares – Hurricane Relief” effort, include:

· Saturday, Oct. 15: Staff and students at the Wade King Student Recreation Center will sponsor a “Pledge Your Sweat” series of fitness workshops, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the center, led by professionals from local fitness organizations and open to campus and community participants. Cost: $20 for students with identification card (must be at least 14 years old); $25 for other participants. Proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross. Free parking will be available. Offerings will include group fitness classes in yoga, pilates, spin cycle, consultations with personal trainers, nutritionists, fitness assessments and more.Contact:Ron Arnold, fitness coordinator, 650-4248; Ron.Arnold@wwu.edu

“Pledge Your Sweat is a community effort to raise money for hurricane relief. Fitness staff from health clubs throughout the Whatcom County area will gather at the Wade King Student Recreation Center to raise money for the Red Cross hurricane relief effort. The Bellingham Athletic Club, YMCA, World Class Fitness, Inc., Yoga Northwest, RMAX.tv International and the Core Kinetics-Movement Studio fitness instructors will join the WWU fitness staff for six hours of fitness instruction. The Recreation Center staff is proud to be a part of this community-wide effort,” said Marie Sather, director of Campus Recreation Services at Western.

· Tuesday, Oct. 18: The second annual “A Chance for Change,” part of a Community Service/Service Learning Fair for students and others to become involved in service learning at Western and in the Bellingham community, is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in WWU’s Viking Union Multipurpose room. In exchange for donations of spare change, students receive a hot lunch. · Wednesday, Oct. 19: Wendy Walker, WWU assistant professor of environmental studies, will present “Disaster is in the Eye of the Beholder: An Alligator’s View of Hurricane Katrina” as a “Turning Points” faculty lecture at 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in Communications Facility room 110. · Wednesday, Oct. 19: The Civil Controversy Speaker Series along with the Social Issues Resource Center will host a discussion/forum on Hurricane Katrina entitled, “Hurricane Katrina and its Aftermath: Keeping the Victims Afloat” at 6:30 p.m. in Communications Facility 115. Free and open to the public, the discussion will focus on the government’s response to the disaster. Larry Estrada, WWU associate professor at Fairhaven College and William Lyne, Western associate professor of English, will be discussion facilitators. Refreshments will be served. · Thursday, Oct. 20 – David Sattler, associate professor of psychology at Western, will speak on “In the Wake of the Storm: Distress, Resiliency, and Recovery” at noon in Communications Facility 420 as part of a Western seminar – with weekly speakers through Dec. 1 – examining natural disasters. For events at the Communications Facility, after 5 p.m., no permit is required inthe nearby south end gravel lots near Fairhaven College. Metered parking requires payment all hours.
