Description: James Bertrand house, 1880, on Bertrand Prairie. A copy is in Jeffcott Oversize. It is captioned: "James Bertrand came in 1858 with the Boundary Survey, working as an axeman for the British Survey Commission. He settled in the Chilliwack District, but in 1870, with his Indian wife, he returned to the American side and took a claim on what became known as Bertrand Prairie. This was just prior to the coming of the Judsons. Originally this was a large log house, the Bertands had eight children, but later it was modernized by adding (board and batten) exterior finish." | |||
