Description: Caption stamped on reverse: "Sandison - Photos That Please - Portrait and Commercial Photography - Bellingham, Wash." Group of buildings on Bellingham waterfront with Lummi Island barely visible across the Bay. Railroad tracks are in the immediate foreground; a large parking lot full of cars (1940's vintage) is in the middle ground; beyond that, boat-related buildings and piers and the water. To the right of the parking lot are four buildings, two of which have signs on them that say " Defense Plant...Arsenal of Democracy" and a third building has a small overhang that says "Squalicum Fill" and a sign on the side of the building: "Harwood Fuel Co." Beyond that building a smoke stack emits black smoke. Possibly the location of Mt. Baker Plywood on Roeder Ave. which did not begin operation until after WWII.

Description: Horizontal warehouse building with large sign on front: "Columbia Valley Lumber Company." Stacks of milled lumber are visible in the foreground at the front of the building and more can be seen inside the building. A smaller building is attached to the larger one on the right side. It is one story, has four white columns across the front and a door in the center. It is probably the office. One man in a suit stands in front of the warehouse and a workman stands to the side of the office building - perhaps a painter since there is a ladder propped against the office building. Columbia Valley Lumber Company was started in 1911 with five lumber yards, including one in Bellingham. By 1915 it had grown to 11 yards and eventually a subsidiary of Bloedel Donovan Lumber Corporation. It shipped lumber by water all over the world.

The women are holding a copy of the Puget Sound Mail newspaper with the headline "New Captain Old Crew - The Ancient Ship Sails On" They are probably in front of the Puget Sound Mail office since "..ET and S" are visible on the window behind the man on the right. The two men in the middle look like brothers; one wears a stained apron; the women wear aprons also. The man on the right wears a dark sports jacket, turtleneck and pants. The other two men wear plaid shirts and jeans; the man on the left has a cigar in his mouth. Description: Unidentified location with an empty field in the foreground next to a large craftsman house with laundry hung on a line outside. Looking beyond is a street going up a hill that probably is 15th St. on South Hill; several prominent Fairhaven buildings could be Wardner Castle, Sacred Heart Church, the Carnegie Library; however the photo may be reversed since the locations of these buildings does not seem quite correct, or this may be an entirely different place.

Description: The craftsman house at the corner of 14th Street and Wilson in Fairhaven with a 1940's automobile parked in front. Galen Biery was born (1910) in and lived in this house before moving to 13th Street in the 1940's. This predates Fairhaven (formerly Valley) Parkway so there are several houses shown that are no longer extant. The brick building across Wilson from the craftsman house still exists as does the house beyond it on Wilson. The immediate foreground is a field which today is park of Creekside Condos. See also photo 3618.
